Shop for Success....Purchase Preparedness

We had a wonderful YW in Excellence on November 14, 2007. Our theme this year was "Shop for Success.... Purchase Preparedness. The cultural hall was set up like a mall. The girls teamed up and chose a value to represent their shop. They decorated their shops, displayed items representing their value project and had to come up with a hands on activity to teach the rest of us about their value project. They did such a fabulous job.

Kylie and Debra- Music shop (Tutog); taught us all how to lead music. For their project they taught the YW and the leaders to sing "If Jesus stood beside me" Soprano and Alto parts included. They did an outstanding job!!!!

Jordan and Hanna - Sports shop; taught us all an LDS cheer. These two also made t-shirts. They displayed trophies and pictures of their cheerleading. "GO SAINTS, GO"

Debra and Amanda - Anne Tailor shop; these two are making their prom dresses so that they can be modest! WONDERFUL! They taught us about reading patterns and passed out a flyer with many websites offering modest prom dresses. Talk about Talent. I can't wait to see the finished dresses.

Bekah and Anita-Craft store; they displayed cross-stitching works and taught us about counted cross-stitch. They also had available needle and thread and paper to practice on. The Bishop did a pretty good job until he ripped the paper. GREAT JOB girls!!

Victoria and Karen-ADVENTURES GRAND OPENING; they went with a store that was about to open and asked us all for help in dressing their manniquin modestly. Very Fun!!

Jesse - Decorating Store; she displayed a house she decorated on her own and taught us a little about decorating. Beautiful and Creative.

YW Leaders - Faith - Garden shop - Having worked on their projects the girls have already planted seeds of faith so tonight we had them plant a small flower in a pot. We reminded them that with the right nurturing their faith can grow. We also had them take a contract home with them to fill out and return to us in a couple of weeks with their choice of a value project that they can work on for next year's young women in Excellence.

We ended the evening with the girls singing "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" and our mall food of smoothies and soft pretzels.

We had a wonderful evening. We learned alot. We are so PROUD of our GIRLS. They are the B.E.S.T!!!!

Fear Factor

Celebrating the Halloween spirit on October 10, the Laurel class planned and executed one of our grossest activities yet, "Fear Factor" . Some of us were a little more afraid than others of "doodoo dunking" fishing for soaked snickers bars in a bowl of chicken broth, being blind folded and digging gumballs out of spaghetti with our teeth, or speed eating an egg, sardine and oyster dinner. No one seemed to be afraid of "cat terd relay" they caught on pretty fast that it was tootsie rolls rolled in cat litter. A lot of laughs and a good time was definitely had and a lot of really good sports.

Defense everybody Defense....

September 26, 2007 Br. Owens, a martial art and self-defense expert came to teach the Miamaids and Laurels about Self-Defense. We learned that Br. Owens has studied the arts since he was 5. His focus for us Wednesday night was the basics of Self-Defense and we learned a lot.

It's important when someone holds you up for your money, let them have it!!! Also instead of handing it to them you should slowly back away and then toss your wallet behind them. This way they will have to turn around to get it and that gives you the opportunity to get out of there.

Karin and Kylie always have a good time together.

These two are a wild pair. They were having a good time as well. Maybe enjoying themselves a little too much.?!

Karate Kids

Wax On.. Wax Off..Paint the house.

Br. Owens we know how you feel. These two are a challenge.

But we love them.

We learned some basic defense moves. We learned that as Daughters of God we have the right to defend ourselves and God will not look down upon us for it. We need to listen to the Holy Ghost. We need to be prepared. Be Alert. Look around us. Travel in groups. Park under the lights. Yell, scream, draw attention to ourselves. Guard and protect our lives and our virtue.

We learned that when you throw a punch you need to have your thumb at the side of your hand like this

because it protects your wrist. When your thumb is like this

it allows your wrist to bend to much and weakens it. Try it. Put your thumb to the side and see how far you can bend your wrist. Now try it in front. See the difference?

Car Maintenance with Mayme

September 19th, 2007 Mayme taught us all about maintaining our cars. We learned the names of some important tools. We learned about checking our oil and transmission fluid. We learned about changing our tires. We learned a little bit about Mayme and about what she does for a living. We had a good time. I think the hit of the night was definitely the "twisty thingy" better known to mechanics as a ratchet or socket wrench.

What do you do before you jack up the car to change a tire?

Answer: loosen the bolts.

FOOD FOR THE FACE

September 5th was our personal progress day and we have one of the best personal progress advisors there is. Sister Loosli taught us how to care for our skin using food. As you can see by the pictures we had a great time. Want to try one of the recipes? Here are a few we tried.........

Peach Tightening Mask

Ingredients:
1 Peach, ripe, peeled, pitted.
1 egg white

Blending Procedures:
1. Whip the peach and egg white togehter in a blender until smooth.
2. Gently pat the mixture all over your face. Relax for 30 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water.

Cinnamon Hand Soak

This will leave your hands (or even feet) silky soft, and slightly scented with cinnamon.

Ingredients:

2 cups water

1 cup milk

1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil

Pinch cinnamon (or any other spice for scent)

Blending Procedures:

1. Mix all ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl large enough to fit both of your hands.

2. Put the bowl in the microwave for 20 seconds, or until the mixture is quite warm, but still comfortable to touch.

3. Soak your hands in mixture for 10 minutes.

4. When you are done soaking, take your hands out, rinse them briefly with lukewarm water, and pat dry.

5. Add your favorite moisturizer if desired.

We love Sister Loosli!!! We love all our leaders, they are the greatest!!!

Our leaders are so supportive and always participate in the fun! The Cinnamon Soak made our hands so SILKY smoooth!

Laurel Cake Decorating

Last spring the Laurels had a really fun cake decorating activity. Our very talented Sister Loosli instructed us all on how to correctly and easily decorate a cake. We had so much fun with this that the Miamaids are talking about doing it next year. Each of the girls were very creative and unique in their designs. Thanks so much Sister Loosli for a night of fun and learning.

Boating on Lake Waco.....

The Texas rain brought in so much water it raised the lake and made it almost impossible for us to go boating this year. However, we were blessed to get to go on August 14, 2007. Schedules were crazy and only five of our young women and two of our leaders were able to go.

We were to meet Bishop Hodson at the Lake at 5:00 p.m. and when we arrived we couldn't find him and figured he had gone out on the lake. We plunked ourselves down on the ground in the shade under a tree trying to stay cool (HA) in the Texas heat when we spotted a boat in the distance with two people waving their arms in distress. What could we do? How would we get to them? Sister Hoffman walked up the hill to the Park Ranger station...... no luck. He couldn't get the boat out by himself, he was the only one on duty. She then made a call to Br. Estrada to get the Bishops cell #. No help there either? We couldn't swim to them, although it was suggested. So we waited and hoped and silently prayed that they could make it to shore.

The Bishop and his friend, Br. Shane, after their distress call, tried paddling with no success. Prayers were said and the boat eventually started. YEAH!!! Isn't it wonderful to have connections with the right people? Thanks to our Father in Heaven for answering prayers.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening of boating, entertainment, and good fun. Sister Hoffman lost her sunglasses as we skipped and bounced over the lake. We enjoyed the crazy stunts performed by our Bishop and Br. Shane. The evening ended with three young women being flipped, well more like launched, out of the tube, tumbling close to 10 feet in the air before splatting into the lake.
